A combination of a sticky surface top sheet with an extremely hard sponge has been a key weapon in China’s domination of the modern world of table tennis. But the uncomfortable truth is that unhealthy external chemicals like speed glue must be applied to balance out the proper elasticity from these hard rubbers. Boosters have been introduced since the ITTF banning of these hazardous chemical aids in 2008. Boosters contain lower level of chemicals but are still hazardous. Boosters are not only considered illegal by the ITTF but also extremely impractical to use. Applying and drying take a far longer time even up to a few days. In addition, boosters often increase the thickness of rubber over the regulation value of 4 mm. The solution is new technology.
